Venice Beach Graffiti Pit

Venice Beach- Graffiti Pit is an urban display of evolving art. Set beside the skate park just off of the main boardwalk on Ocean Front Walk, it is a colorful array of graffiti artwork created by a community of artists.

For the price of a permit and signing an artist agreement stipulating no hate speech, violence, pornography, drug or gang references and profanity- artist can ‘rent’ time and space to express themselves on one of several walls.  Time is limited and art space is recycled allowing artist to paint over works.

Originally conceived of by the ICU organization, the Venice Art Walls or Pits are what remain of the Venice Pavilion structure when it was torn down in 1999, as part of the Oceanfront Walk refurbishment.

This brings me back to my youth. I miss the days of ditching high school, driving down to venice and spending the day on that sand! Miss that town! Great pics!

What a great public art idea.
I like your photos too, beautiful blues.
Do you live in Venice Ca? I visited there once a long time ago, and took some pictures of the walls too, I remember one with arches like an architectural arcade painted on a wall but maybe or probably that painting is long gone:)
Happy day to you.

I've never seen these walls...being from NJ. We see some pretty impressive graffiti while taking the train to NYC. I think of how different our worlds are and how much the same. Interesting.

This rules. My son would be drooling.

I'm keeping him away from spray paint for as long as I can...

I live the contrast between the unpainted skate park and the graffiti walls.

I don't quite expect to find anything like this in Venice. I thought it would be all vintage and old. Hahahaha.

it is smart to sanction an area for graffiti art and make the artists follow some rules. it sure would be nice if they left some of the other areas in cities alone.

Thanks so much for sharing your fantastic photos. The graffiti is incredible art. I enjoyed seeing a place I've heard of but never been to. I'm putting it on my list of things to do in life. Take care and have a great rest of the week.

This landscape is so different than my own. I don't see much graffiti art in rural Massachusetts!

We LOVE that skate park! We don't skate, but love to watch the skateboarders. They are REALLY good.

Beautiful project! I love this idea of positive graffiti and making it legal and accessible in public spaces.
It is great to see more and more community projects like this one popping up!!

Thanks for all the feedback on the Venice Art Walls. I just wanted to let you know that the permits have always been free. I am the Curator of the Venice Art Walls and the Director of ICU Art, the organization that has managed the Venice Art Walls program since 2000 when the area was remodeled and became officially legal. You can visit the walls any day, but there is only painting on weekends. Anyone can paint as long as you have ID and your paint. Stash Maleski www.veniceartwalls.com
