I worked for Hudson's Bay company several years. When I first started at the age of eighteen I worked retail at the company headquarter store in Toronto. Eventually I worked as a visual merchandiser setting up new stores. The Hudson’s Bay Company (HBC) is the oldest commercial corporation in North America and one of the oldest in the world. The company was founded in 1670. Originally it catered largely to the aboriginal people and it’s primary trade was fur.
The Hudson Bay blanket is fundamentally Canadian. My grandparents had one and for our engagement my grandmother bought us one. I love to use it during the winter.

The four colors on the ‘point blankets’ are Green, Red, Yellow and Indigo. Traditionally the colors represent: Green is taken to mean new life, red often stands for battle or hunt, yellow relates to harvest and sunshine and blue water. The blankets are produced in England by John Atkinson and Sons.
The blanked has been repurposed to make many different things like coats, shoes, hats, scarves and even home accessories:
Do you have one? Wish you did?
I want a jacket!

Thanks for giving us more insight on Hudson Bay Company. How amazing that it's been around for more than 300 years!
p.s. We followed the first part of the formula pre-karaoke but my friends had too much fun at the outdoor bar to get to karaoke. We have to try again another time!
Meh, can't see these images, will come back later - maybe it will work then :)
I never knew that about the colour. What a sweet post.

It certainly is iconic. I slept with many a Hudson's Bay blanket in my youth. I don't know why but my parents had three or four of them. Nice warm, scratchy wool.....
Interesting. But I cannot see the photos either - just little red x's!

Thank you for letting me know or I would not have even bothered to check- They were there when I did my post preview last night- Not sure if it is blogger or my comp- (I just used my laptop to upload-) has that happened to anyone else- any advice on what it means when the photos have little red x or blue question marks-

I love Hudson Bay Co. blankets! (Isn't there a belief or legend that white is the warmest color, too?)
My grandparents had one and I don't and now it's on my list. :)
I had never heard of this company! Great stuff! Can I borrow your jacket when you get it?
Love the colors and the jacket and the shoes-yes I like it all. Great to know a bit about the history. This company has staying power.

I have a vintage J.C. Penney kind of knockoff of this blanket, looks exactly the same and it's also on our bed. I want that jacket, oh it is just fantastic. GREAT engagement present by the way.
The jacket is amazing. Love it.
