I did this Bean Mosaic project with the monkeys and they enjoyed it. We've done 'real' mosaic art before but this is a quick and easy project that was easy to clean up afterwards. I bought a bag of mixed beans and gave them some glue. We started off 'filling up' the pictures from a coloring book. Once their creative juices were flowing they made some of their own designs using blank paper.
This project is great for exercising those fine motor skill- with both the sorting and the meticulous gluing and placement.
Questions to consider while creating:
What materials (medium) are we using to create?
What texture does this medium (beans) create?
What sort of effect can you create with the raised and recessed areas? (Depth)
Could this be considered a sculpture? (trick question- no it is two dimensional)
What is your favorite FAST art project to do?

right now i'm doing Science experiements with my Niece - so much fun!
You know, that looks like so much fun I wouldn't mind doing one myself. My daughter is grown and gone so not too many glue projects around here anymore. Husband and I are trying to make this large painting for our living room, it is not going as planned - perhaps beans would be a good alternative.
Aw, I remember these from my own monkey days! What a great idea (and I love that last pic!)
P.S. Haha, I love what you said about cheese *before* dinner - I prefer it that way too!
I was feeling lame after seeing your terrific food in the last post, and now I'm feeling even lamer seeing this great project you set up for your kids. I need to be more creative in this way. I so often leave it up to my children to find their own activities. But, if I had some great ideas I could probably stave off some whining!
what a great project!!!! i am sure my son will love doing that :)
This looks like a fun little project for some monkeys :)
that's a great idea...
I think my GD will really like doing this. Of course, we'll have to hear the "magical fruit" poem fifty times while she's doing it...
Ren-my bf totally takes my outfit pics and he is definitely not a photographer. Helps to have a little cocktail before you start. hehe

Beans-the color of nature-what a great idea-they are like little pebbles. Looks like you all had fun!
beans! i am NO FAN of EATING beans, so this looks like an excellent use of them! ha! love it!
Wow, I haven't seen those since I was in kindergarten. Btw you are such a good mum, lucky monkeys!
that is so cute... as a kid i loved to plant them and see them grow!!!
love it. and love your preppy green shirt.
We did a cool project at preschool the other day I will post soon. quick easy and fun.
our favorite quick art projects are usually gluing cut paper, googly eyes, etc.
that, and M. likes making contraptions with tape and construction paper/recycled items.
We used to do something like this when we were kids too.

Being a kindergarten teacher, I'm a big fan of "bean art".
The colors can't be beat.
This looks soo FUN! I'll have to try it out. Im loving the natural bean colors! Have a lovely merry happy day and love to you and yours!
Fun! Thanks for sharing!!
great idea, i have to do this with my kids!
I'm so gonna try this with my nephews! Crafting ideas are always welcome!! x
Awesome project! And I love that last monkey picture!
I've been thinking mosaics, too. :)
Looks like a super fun project. I should get my oldest to do something like this!
Oh, we just crafted with beans recently too :-) Such delightful fun. But the baby wanted to eat them, as well as the cornmeal dough they were being set into.
I *love* the bean eyes and the happy moments you captured.
I loved the picture of your son making bean eyes - so funny. Good idea - we made a sunflower with orange lentils last autumn.
Thanks for the comment on my blog!
I remember doing this as a kid and loving it, but I completely forgot about it. Perhaps I need to expose them to the joys of actually being allowed to play (and create) with your food! Thanks for the reminder :)
