Romertherme- Baden, Austria- Sulpher Bath, Mineral Springs

Baden is a small spa and wine town about an hours train ride away from Vienna.
Dr J and I spent a glorious day at the Romertherme 'Health Resort' which features one of the most beautiful sauna and bathing landscapes- under the largest, freely suspended, glass roof in Europe. Apparently this spa was a favorite of the composer Beethoven's- I don't think the glass roof was around then!

The Schwefelwandl (small sulphured water baths) are in the 'open air' area.
We had the good fortune of enjoying beautiful warm weather while we relaxed.
This main large pool was connected via separate water 'tunnels' to the outside sulfur baths that were kept at around 36c and had massage like waterfalls.

The outside sulfur pool area had lounge chairs:

There was even a restaurant with cafeteria style health food:

Dr. J and I bought the 'all inclusive' pass which gave us access to the Sauna and Steam Bath area.
There were two Finnish saunas, two aroma stream baths, a bio sauna and an Ottoman steam bath.
Most of these were co-ed naked.
They actually had signs (wish I got a photo) of male/female swimsuit with a big 'X' across them.
We hung out most often in the eucalyptus aroma steam room when we were not in the sulfur baths and it was fantastic.
I must say the European spas are very different from North American Spas!

Have you ever been in a mineral or sulfur bath?

Oh wow! I don't know if I could go in there naked. Must be the American in me. I am fairly modest in that way! But it does sounds so lovely to just relax and enjoy the water.

Looks luxurious! I have been to many mineral baths.. Sadly, I got a plantar's wart from one in budapest....ewwww..... but love going anyways. Some of my favorite hot springs have been ones in Colorado and Montana that we have hiked out to.

I have not been to anything like this. Ever.

And co-ed naked? I'm just crazy enough to think that sounds like fun.

This looks incredibly blissful. We are fortunate to have several spas/springs/etc. here in northern California. I've been in the mineral pools at Indian Springs in St. Helena (wine country) a few times and it always feels amazing. I think I'm overdue for a visit. These pictures have me drooling!

Nope. Do they smell sulfur-y?

The most interesting bath experience I had was in a hammam, having someone else scrub me down. It's not typical to be scrubbed down while naked by another naked person who is also a stranger. But you only live once, right? It was an awesome experience.

Next up....sulfur bath!

A Beethoven favorite? How divine! I've been to a handful in the Southwest, and the experience has always been pleasantly odd-it must be in the water!

The co-ed naked thing would freak me out! When I was in Norway, I was a bit shocked by the naked sauna lark in my hotel (separate ladies though)... apparently swimsuits harbour germs :-)

I could do with a day here apart from the naked bit. What a great holiday!

My hubbie and I went to a river with hot sulpher springs in Tuscany, Italy. It was stinkily wonderful. No spa - just us and a few locals in the steaming creek on an early morning. I'll never forget it.

Hello!

I love spas (not as much as the sea, but anyway...)! :)
My country is full of them, many different.
Maybe most interesting is the black thermomineral water with a slight smell of oil in Moravske toplice spa, which is unique worldwide.
And I was several times also in a sulphur bath in a spa on our coast.
In several places is also a nudist area, just a terrace or a bigger area.
Have a nice day!

Maybe You'll Enjoy These Too...
