Polish Food In Toronto- Cafe Polonez- Roncesvalles Village

Going home to Toronto is a mixed bag of tangibly different and always the same.  It never ceases to amaze me how the Polish neighborhood I grew up in has become a hot spot for young yuppie families.
Within an hour of being back I was speaking Polish (another thing that never ceases to amaze me that I can jump right into it) and ordering authentic Polish food from a restaurant that is one of very few that has been around since before my time.
Cafe Polonez has changed outwardly having undergone extensive renovations yet the food is the same taste that I call 'home'.

My mother and I both ordered the pickle soup- hands down my favorite Polish soup
This is my dish- I ordered cabbage rolls and it came with a beet horseradish salad,  sauerkraut and coleslaw
My aunt ordered the chicken cutlet- which is actually my favorite dish at Polonez
She also ordered a tasty compote- a Polish style fruit juice
The classic potato pierogi and roasted chicken my cousin S ordered with sauteed onions & sour cream in the little cups
If you are interested in making your own Polish food I have posted easy how to's of my grandmothers recipes for cabbage rolls and pierogi

What foods reminds you of 'home'?

Our dear Friday game night friends are from Poland. Once I tasted her pierogis, I couldn't eat store bought ever again. They are amazing. She often gives us a big bag for our birthdays - best present ever!

MMMmmmmmm! I love perogi! I grew up in Chicago, so when I think of foods that remind me of home, it is deep dish pizza and sausages. ;)

I am what some would call OBSESSED with pierogi, so I'm off to check out your post on that!

And I don't have a lot of experience (beyond pierogi) with Polish food but it looks delicious! I'm glad you had a good (and yummy) trip back!

I've tried pickle soup and if I'm honest, I'm not sure I'd enjoy it, BUT it somehow still looks good to me! Maybe you just take really good pictures :)

I am rather surprised that pierogi were served with anything else - for me it is complete dish, like Italian Ravioli.

Pickle soup - I understand made with gherkins in brine? The salty ones, not the ones from a vinegar, but from a salty brine. :) I love this soup too, but I do not like to put any cream in, it looks like this one had cream.

There is many things in Polish food that became popular in the world however I have to say, real posh Polish cuisine is forgotten, because of the time of communism - first of all system got rid of noble people who had strong traditions, secondly economy was weak and lack of everything in the shops was common, so poverty dishes became more popular.

Pierogi is probably my favourite Polish dish ever and remind me my childhood very much! :)

What a delicious homecoming! Unfortunately, the foods of my youth were mostly boxed and ready-made...not the stuff of sweet culinary memories! :)
