Shelter Cove

In the 1920's, when they built the Coast Highway in northern California, engineers decided that a stretch of the coast, from northern Mendocino County- through Humboldt County, was too rugged to make a road.
Thus, an expanse of magnificent coast line soon became isolated and hard to get to- this is now referred to as the 'Lost Coast'.
There is a small community called Shelter Cove which is located about 45 minutes away from Garberville in southern Humboldt County.

We spent a lovely day watching the Harbor Seals and Sea Lions (above Dr. J is taking photos of them on the rock beyond).  We spotted many different types of birds, sea otters, hermit crabs, fish, and even an eel.

In the several hours we spent at the beach picnicking and exploring the tide pools we only saw two other people- it was beautiful and serene- I am so glad they left this small part of the California coast undeveloped.

Have you ever visited the Lost Coast?
What is the most secluded beach you have been to?

i haven't been to the lost coast but it looks beautiful. i like all the rugged coastlines in nocal and the pacific northwest. hmmm. the most secluded beach i've ever been to? i was always impressed by the absence of people on guana bay in st. maarten, but it must be a beach i visited in kauai that i don't know the name of. a friend who lives there took us and it was quite a hike down.

What a beautiful family day of exploring you all had. Those Sea Lions and Harbor Seals look like they were close enough that you all got an earful of their conversations. Lovely photos.

Wow - sea lions and harbour seals! Isn't it wonderful watching your kids delight in nature? The other day I saw my boy just seemingly stand in the garden doing nothing. Next thing he was on his bed looking through a book on butterflies trying to identify what he had seen. Beats time at the computer right? X.

One of the best parts of living in California, seeing the beautiful beaches and the Seals! I didn't get that in Denver!

The Northern California coast is my favorite. Probably because it reminds me of PNW beaches ;) What fun the kids must have had!

Maybe You'll Enjoy These Too...
