We have a really cool black silhouette in our dinning room of my youngest. Ever since Kara Walker showed at the gallery where I was working, I have become obsessed with her work (I will absolutely write an entry about her soon). Somehow all this got me to research shadow art and I stumbled upon Tim Nobel and Sue Webster’s work.
Tim Noble and Sue Webster met in university while studying fine art in the 1980’s. They have worked as a pair ever since and create enchanting and provocative conceptual and installation based art work.
This series of works from their first solo show in 1996 were made using trash found in the streets of London and titled British Rubbish. The piles of debris have light projected onto them which then cast shadows creating representational forms.
More recently they have created a coresponding investigation using neon lights, signs and sculptures which refrence iconic cultural symbols such as Andy Warhol's silk screen print of the dollar sign.
Mr. Noble and Ms. Webster have works displayed in the permenent collections in New York, London, Copenhagen, France, Houston, Athens, Dallas, Iran, Denver and Seoul.
Their association with the artistic group Young British Artists or YBAs, known for their shock and sensation has given them a platform to express the coarse aspects of society. Since 1992 they have maintained support from the Saatchi Gallery.
