Like most large cities there are a variety of Indian Markets in town. Dr. J loves cooking Asian meals and over the weekend we spent some time stocking up on all of his special ingredients.
I love these monkey idols (since I love monkeys).

The character of Hanuman is said to teach of the unlimited power that lays unused in each of us.
Dried legumes are a staple in Indian cuisine and so healthy for you.
I love Star Anise- the smell is lovely-
I bought more incense since I am obsessed!
Almost bought some Rangoli Color but stopped myself since I am sure I can make it out of colored sand

We don't cook too much Indian food but there are some really great markets on the north side of town that sell specialty items/spices. They're all independent businesses and they're amazing.
My husband and I are not big fans of Indian food but my daughter loves it. I do however, share your love of incense - much to the chagrin of my husband.
Love your photos! We have an Indian market and several Asian markets where I'm at. I always find myself spending far more time in them than I intend looking at the packaging. Like the BMK Rakhi package you show here with the leaf elephant, they're just so interesting and artful.
i LOVE indian cuisine! i'm still learning how to cook dishes from scratch (i've used shop bought pastes in the past) but i love so many of the spices... cumin, coriander, garam masala, tumeric... i also love fresh ginger and chilli. i'm hungry!
what's dr j's fave meal to make? i'm not great at indian cooking though i made indian rice pudding last night, but my parents are so we stock up whenever we go there!

Mmm, I love indian food. I like to do a nice spiced curry with a blend of garam masala, tumeric, cayenne, cumin and plenty others! It takes a while, but so good. BTW - I'm super jealous that your guy loves to cook!

I'm guilty of throwing a pinch of curry into everything, but I've never really tried my hand at serious Indian cooking, even though it's our favorite food! You've inspired me!
This makes me miss the shops in South London where I lived for a while. We had all sorts of shops including an Turkish bakery that I loved - amazing breads. I'm finding suburbia so boring by comparison. Lovely pictures too. Thanks for your comment at mine and the follow :)
I love those beautifully colored bags of rice. I like to make curried lentils with coconut milk. I buy curry powder with the spices already blended together.

I love the smell of Indian grocery stores, that heady blend of spices. Indian food needs a lot of spices on hand, so there's always something that is needed.
Indian cooking is definite slow, in a good way, but also time consuming. Done patiently the flavors are rich, complex, and subtle.
Having said that, I'm always short of time. So the one thing every Indian mum equips their children with is a pressure cooker. Really speeds up the dals.

Although we never cook Indian food at home, there was a fairly large Indian area full of shops and restaurants not too far from where we used to live.
Loved to walk around there and then eat!
pretty pictures and i like the rangoli colors. what will you do with them if you make them yourself? i use coriander, turmeric, and cumin on a regular basis.
I LOVE that califlower dish, one of my favorites! We used to have a friend from India who would make it for us. She would serve it with raw nuts. Yum.
