Asian Market

Two out of four of us hate going to the Asian Market. The smell sends Gman into a fit of olfactory over stimulations making the whole experience unpleasant.
Today we had the opportunity to do a little shopping without the monkeys.

The seafood selection is amazing and they have a large variety of live and freshly killed fish and shell fish.

We also get all of our sushi grade seafood at the Asian market.

We did not pick up the dreaded duran- The smelliest fruit IN THE WORLD.

The Asian market I go to reminds me more of a pet store...than a grocery store...lots of live seafood in tanks...and live frogs...I wish you would have got a durian to try! lol

lol @ durans...i used to hate it alot, but while waiting in line to pick a fresh one for my mom, i started getting "used" to the smell, and ended up, liking it! does sound unbelievable but once u got used to the smell, it actually tastes not bad! :)

You are right about the smells. They are so unique to the Asian markets. I love shopping at them they always offer such a different batch of wonderful ingredients. Beautiful photos. Great post.

LOVE yoru pictures. And so jealous you have an Asian Market. But very happy we now have sushi night in place of pizza night. my monkeys now dig the sushi and I couldn't be happier. I have NEVER seen salmon steak like that. but I want to, in person. yum!

I must remember never to take my 3 year old to an asian market......she gags and throws up (if the smell is really strong) over any pungent smell.....good or bad, garlic included.

Bo- I am waiting for you to post when you buy a duran and eat it!
Karumen- One day maybe I will try it for now I will stick to stinky cheeses!
Lazaro- Thanks, I used to hate the smells when I was little so I understand how my monkey feels.
Sherri- The selection never ceases to amaze me. Glad your monkeys are into sushi- only one of mine is.
Nancy- Oh no even garlic! No do not take her to an Asian Market.

OMG I would kill for a Durian right now.. *sigh*... but frozen durian's don't quite smell or taste the same as fresh Durians...

Over here in Melb, the Italian Gelatos' have got Durian flavoured gelati and it sells like hot cakes! (Not literally of course)

What is sooo special about durian that although it smells so badly some people love it? I'm asking because I've never met with this fruit personally and it looks..well..different;]

That place looks awesome. We have a great "international" market here, that has some really great stuff. I go there for fresh sushi and lots of Greek salads and hummus and....yum!

Durians, either you love it or you hate it. I love durians but DH will run miles away from them. Ever since I get to know DH, I've stopped eating durians :-(

I've been to a few Asian Markets in some western countries and they all had the same smell. It's difficult to imagine if you've not visited one. In the olden days, Singapore's wet market used to smell like that too but after government's intervention (chiller for raw meat and some major renovation in the older markets), the smell disappeared!

3 hungry- that is funny
Msihua- I might try the icecream version.
Just- I have seen shows where they show people smelling the fruit- I also know that some Asian markets have banned it because of the smell. I have never tried it.
Auntjuicebox- we love hummus-
Blessed hm- every since I met Dr.J I eat very little papaya because he will not eat it- I also stopped using
parsnips in my cooking because he doesn't like it.

Maybe You'll Enjoy These Too...
